About
Joan of Art is an independent publication that wades through the murky depths of art history, forges a path through the frontiers of contemporary art, and considers every facet that supports visual culture. The study of art should not be clinical in nature, but rather a devout practice. Critical, yes, but a practice of criticism and analysis that is born from great conviction and fervor. To consider art is to consider the soul of humanity, its beauty to its depravity. Welcome to a community of fanatics, desperate to know and feel and be more. Where expression is as essential as breathing in a world determined to stamp out such dangerous ideas as individuality and creative thought.
Crusades
A sacred duty, to survey the past with fresh eyes and peer into the darkest, most forgotten corners of the canon. Joan of Art seeks to question established narratives, uncover buried treasures, and decode symbols within art history, with particular preference to the feminine, the grotesque, and the metaphysical. From artists to movements, no topic will be left unscathed and no man is safe from scrutiny.
Musings
A collection of considerations concerning the tenets of visual culture. From the implications of technology and the uses of various media, to inherent fallacies in the study of art and modern issues facing the art world. As a people heavily reliant on visual stimuli, it is vital to recognize the things we see for what they are and how they impact the collective. Sometimes mundane, sometimes imperative, always in pursuit of better understanding the constructs governing us.
The Current Age
Fixing our eyes on the past and refusing to acknowledge the present is a grave disservice to the sacred calling of artistic study. Historical and contemporary art are two side of the same coin, informing and expounding on each other in a symbiotic partnership. The world is full of skilled visionaries who are creating masterpieces that both build upon and shatter established conventions. These artistic prophets are the voices and heartbeats of humanity, as well as agents of its own demise.
